prep the surface
Before you start wrought iron fence painting you need to make sure the area is free of any loose or flaking paint otherwise new paint will not stick to the surface properly. Sanding is necessary on vertical posts and horiztonal rails. The most important thing in this step is removing the debris. Dont wear yourself out trying to sand all the vertical pickets because this project is not a car..its a fence.

After you have the rough surfaces under control then next thing is to coat those areas with a rust-preventing primer. If you are using a high quality paint that is made to apply directly to metal then you might be able to skip this step because the primer will already be apart of the formula. In other words, the primer and final paint are one product so you will only apply once when painting your iron fence.

Last but not least, apply your coat of paint with a Binks pressure pot spray machine. Brushes, rollers and paint gloves leave streaks and it is very hard to apply an even coat. We have found that using directional patterns are best when paitning to avoid missing spots.
