The Secret Sauce
Best paint for Iron Fence Restoration
What enamel do you use for iron fence painting?
We have been using Sherwin Williams Industrial Enamel for years with great success. It is an oil based enamel that endures the Texas weather very well.
How long does the paint last?
It will last 5 years before needing to apply a maintenance coat.
How do you handle overspray?
The pressure pot spray system that we use does a good job in significantly reducing overspray. It is able to do this becuase we can control the fluid pressure as well as the air pressure independantly. Our painting guns are similar to how one would paint an automobile. Due to fences being outdoors there is the possibiliy of some overspray. In this case we use weighted drop clothes where necessary.
How do you prepare an iron fence for painting?
Several methods can be used depending on your specific application. The overall goal is to clean up any rough edges and remove any areas where old paint is chipped or peeling. New paint should be applied on a surface free of these things in order for it to last.
Can you fix areas that are rusting before painting?
Yes. We provide all repair services for your iron fence or railing. This can be cutting out old sections of rusted railing, replacing broken picket, fixing gate latches and more.
Is the paint color acceptable to my HOA?
Yes we use a package black color that comes standard with Sherwin Williams Industrial Enamel. It is a slightly gloss black color that is accepted by all homeowner associations.

Rust Treatment
For severe rusted areas, we may need to compleatly cut out and remove these sections. We do this my using a grinder to cut out the metal, then weld new steel back in place. Finally we will coat that areas with a full coat of rust-inhibiting primer.
Light rusted areas we can use either sandpaper, wire brush or a tiger paw on a right angle grinder to prepare the surface for painting.
02.
Preparing your iron fence
Power washing is usually not needed unless there is a heavy accumulation of mud or other debris adhering to the fence.
Surfaces to be painted are wire brushed to remove loose material, then lightly sanded to remove surface oxidation and to create a profile for improved adhesion of the top coat.
Preparation is very important because it is the foundation to making this a long lasting restoration project.
03.
Paint Selection
We recommend a semi or flat black for your iron fence restoration because it will hide imperfections better than a gloss.
Inspired Ironworks uses oil based enamels for use on wrought iron. For customers who prefer a gloss sheen, we have started using urethane alkyds.
The paints used are direct-to-metal products that do not require primer unless needed to combat significant cases of rust.
04.
Product Application
Paint is applied using a pressure pot spray system with a high volume, low pressure paint gun. This method is superior to using an airless sprayer due to the amount of control over the product that if gives. For more information on this check out our blog article on airless versus pressure pot paint sprayers.
